John and Sam’s Tip of the Week
This tip is something we hope you can implement into your practice away from the course and will help you to enjoy your game more. A big part of our golfing time is spent out on the course, we all get those periods of time when we hit a bad run of form and cannot seem to put a score together.
How many of you practise away from the course? Record stats? For example, greens hit, or putts had per round?
A great way to practise is to pick 3-4 holes you struggle with on the course. Using those 3-4 holes we want you to try and play them on the driving range. By hitting the same clubs off of the tee that you would on the course. Then hitting the approach or layup clubs you might hit. Even if the hole is a par 3 then play the hole and hit the club you would use off the tee. You will find very quickly that you can probably hit the shots at will on the range, but why not on the course? This is all mental and is something that happens so often with golfers. You will find by playing the holes on the range you will start to be more confident when getting to those dreaded 3-4 holes you regularly blob.
How many times do you hear golfers say, ‘I can’t play this hole’ or ‘I can’t hit my 8 iron’ These are ludicrous statements and can be fixed by better practice and changing mindset?
The last resort if this doesn’t help you is to ask John or Sam to take you out onto the course and get an expert opinion if the fault persists.
As good as new equipment can be, the equipment cannot fix a fundamental problem, nothing will ever beat good practise and a lesson from a professional who understands your golf. We hope you can try and practise this on the range and see whether this changes your mindset on the course in the future! Playing winter golf?
Advice from the Professionals:
- Tee up in the rough if you struggle in these conditions - Increase your playing handicap through periods of bad playing conditions to make the game easier - Play shorter formats - Play team or pairs competitions - Tee off from the start of the fairway if you struggle with the wet ground conditions
We want you to enjoy your golf, no matter how wet the ground is and poor the weather has been. Make things easier.
